Baby names

Type any first name to see how many US babies got it every year since 1880, when it peaked, and the states where it is most popular now.

Questions people ask

Where does the data come from?

From the US Social Security Administration, which counts the first names on Social Security card applications for babies born in the US. It publishes every name given to at least five babies of the same sex in a year, back to 1880.

Why is my name missing?

Names given to fewer than five babies in a year are left out to protect privacy, so very rare names, or rare spellings, may not appear in some years or at all. The data also only covers babies born in the United States.

What does "per million babies" mean?

It compares years fairly: far more babies are born now than in 1900, so the chart shows how many of every million girls (or boys) born that year got the name.

Data: US Social Security Administration, names from Social Security card applications for babies born in the US, 1880–2025 (public domain). Names given to fewer than five babies in a year are not published.
