Your money, in plain words

When Social Security can start, the day you could retire, today's exchange rates, and calculators that stay on this device.

This is information, not advice. Nothing here is a forecast, a recommendation, or the rate a bank or card company will give you. For a decision about borrowing, saving, or tax, talk with a qualified person.

Born on January 1: use the year before. Born on the 1st of any month: Social Security figures your age as if you were born the month before. You must be 62 for the whole month to be paid for it. Starting early lowers the benefit by 5/9 of 1% for each of the first 36 months and 5/12 of 1% for each month after that. Waiting past full retirement age adds 2/3 of 1% a month (8% a year) up to age 70, for people born in 1943 or later.

Everyday prices

Prices people feel

These are not live shelf prices. A grocery aisle, a fuel pump, and a rent payment move on different clocks, and none of them is the same on every street.

Fuel

A full tank is a price you feel on an ordinary week. The number on the pump is local, and it moves with oil, tax, and the station on the corner.

Rent

Rent, or the mortgage payment that stands in for it, is usually the largest bill in the month. A national average will not match your building or your street.
