Calorie calculator for adults

An estimate of the energy your body uses in a day, from age, size and activity. It is a screening figure, not a diet plan.

Uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, then multiplies by an activity factor. It is not medical or diet advice. Ask a clinician before changing how you eat.

Private by design: this tool runs in your browser. Nothing you add is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Enter your age, sex, height and weight.
  2. Choose the activity level that looks like a normal week.
  3. Read the calories to keep your weight steady, and the number at rest.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between the two numbers?

The smaller one is an estimate of energy used at complete rest. The larger one adds an ordinary day of movement.

Is this right for everyone?

No. Pregnancy, some conditions and some medicines change what a person needs. The equation is a population average.

How many calories should I eat to lose weight?

A small, steady cut below the "steady weight" number is safer than a big one. Talk to a doctor or dietitian first.
