Pope Leo XIV Needs No Further Treatment After Lung Cancer Surgery

Doctors Report No Further Therapy

Doctors said Wednesday that Pope Leo XIV will not need more treatment after surgery for lung cancer. A follow-up assessment found no requirement for additional therapy, according to their statement.

Tumor Found By Chance

Margaritora told Vatican News that the malignant tumor was discovered accidentally during a routine examination. Doctors noticed a small mark near the bottom of the lung. He said the finding might have been missed had it been positioned slightly higher.

Leo, 71, departed the hospital on Saturday, four days after surgery, as a large crowd welcomed him. The following day, he led his customary noon prayer at the Vatican.

He thanked people for their prayers and hospital staff for their care. Leo said the experience had brought him closer to people facing illness or infirmity, and that he planned to restart his activities gradually.
