Clear a jammed disposal
With the power off, free a humming disposal from the hex socket underneath, then press the reset button. Keep your hands out.
Tools you need
- Flashlight
- The hex key that fits the socket under the unit
- Pliers or tongs
- A wooden spoon
Steps
Turn the wall switch off. Unplug the unit under the sink if you can see the plug. Ask anyone nearby to leave that switch alone.
Keep hands and fingers out of the disposal, including while it is off.
Look in with a flashlight. If a utensil or a bone is visible, lift it out with pliers or tongs.
If the motor hummed and stalled, fit the hex key into the socket on the bottom center. Turn it back and forth until the jam lets go and the turntable moves. You can also press a wooden spoon handle against the edge of the turntable from above.
Press the reset button on the underside until it clicks. Plug the unit back in if you unplugged it.
Run cold water, then switch the disposal on for a few seconds. A spin and a clear drain means the jam is gone.
