The short version

Robert De Niro is trending chiefly because Anupam Kher shared news and images of a lunch and reunion with him in the US ¹².
Kher said De Niro welcomed him at home and gave him a cap; Kher described the visit as personally meaningful ¹².
The reports describe the two actors as friends and say they have known each other since working together more than a decade ago ¹².
A headline about De Niro criticizing Donald Trump is not supported by the supplied article, which is about Mark Ruffalo ³⁴.

Why is Robert De Niro in the news?

The immediate news is a reunion between De Niro and Indian actor Anupam Kher. Kher shared photos and video from a visit in the United States, saying De Niro and his partner, Tiffany Chen, hosted him for lunch ¹.

Kher described De Niro as a close friend and said their conversations and the welcome at De Niro’s home meant a great deal to him ¹². The reports present this as a personal visit, not as an announcement about a film or a public event.

What happened between Robert De Niro and Anupam Kher?

According to Kher’s post, he met De Niro during a trip to the US and spent time with him at his home. A video showed De Niro giving Kher a cap, which Kher singled out as a valued gesture ¹.

The reports say their friendship dates back to working together more than a decade ago, but the supplied articles do not name that project or provide further detail about how they first became friends ².

Why did the cap matter to Kher?

The cap appears to matter because of the relationship behind it, rather than because it is described as a rare or expensive item. Kher wrote warmly about De Niro’s generosity, the time they spent talking, and the chance to meet again ¹².

That is Kher’s account of what the visit meant to him. The reports do not give a separate statement from De Niro about the lunch or the gift.

Is Robert De Niro also in the news for criticizing Trump?

The provided sources do not verify that claim. Although one of the supplied headline prompts attributes insulting remarks about Trump to De Niro, the linked Daily Beast report is about actor Mark Ruffalo speaking at a voting-rights event ³. IGN also reports on Ruffalo’s comments, not De Niro’s ⁴.

It would therefore be misleading to treat those articles as evidence that De Niro made the remarks. The available material supports the reunion story, not the claim about De Niro and Trump.

What does this mean for an ordinary reader?

For most readers, this is a small entertainment story about two actors maintaining a friendship and sharing a private lunch. It does not announce a new project, and the reports do not suggest that readers need to take any action.

De Niro is an American actor and producer, known for a long career and several major honors ⁵. That background helps explain the attention around a personal meeting, but the current reports focus on Kher’s account of the visit.
