Lakers Preseason Opener: What to Know About the Kings Game

What are the Lakers, and what is happening now?

The Los Angeles Lakers are a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association, or NBA. They are based in Los Angeles and play in the league’s Western Conference ³.

On Monday, October 5, 2026, they begin their preseason against the Sacramento Kings at the Kings’ home arena in Sacramento ¹². A preseason game is a warm-up contest before the regular-season schedule. Teams use this period to prepare, assess players and try combinations.

Why are people talking about this Lakers game?

It is the first time this Lakers group will face an opponent together after a week of training camp. The roster has changed, and the matchup offers fans an early look at how its players might fit alongside Luka Doncic ².

The game is also the opening stop in a crowded preseason stretch. The Lakers are scheduled to play three games in four days, including a back-to-back, meaning games on consecutive days ¹. That pace is one reason not to expect a full roster or full workloads every night.

What should fans watch for in the opener?

The main questions are about roles and how the players work together. The Lakers’ coach, JJ Redick, has said there are opportunities available, including two starting places alongside Doncic ². The game may provide an early view of candidates and combinations, though preseason choices do not necessarily predict the final lineup.

Fans can also look for signs of on-court chemistry: how players share the ball, communicate and adjust to one another. One game is only a small sample, especially when the team is managing minutes across several games in a short span ¹.

Will the Lakers play their stars for the whole game?

That is not established by the available reports. The schedule makes it likely that the Lakers will not have full rosters available for every preseason game, according to the game preview ¹.

The same preview notes that in past preseasons the team has used its stars in only one of three games, but it is unclear whether that pattern will continue this year ¹. So the opener may feature some key players without offering a complete picture of the team.

What does this mean for an ordinary reader?

For casual viewers, this is a first look, not a result to treat as a verdict on the season. Preseason games are useful for seeing new players in Lakers uniforms and noticing which roles the coaches are testing. They do not show how the team will perform once regular-season games begin.

The Lakers are a well-known franchise with 17 NBA championships, according to the supplied team reference ³. That history helps explain the attention around the team, but it does not answer how this particular roster will perform. The opener is a starting point for watching those questions develop.

What is still unknown about the Lakers’ preseason?

The reports do not confirm which players will take the floor, how many minutes they will play, or which combinations will get the most time. The broader questions about starting roles and how the changed roster fits together remain open ¹².

Those answers may become clearer over several preseason games, but the sources available here do not provide results or later developments. As of October 5, 2026, the sensible takeaway is that the opener begins the evaluation rather than completes it.
