Ole Miss Punter Oscar Bird Earns Major National Recognition Ahead of Georgia Showdown

Midseason watch list selection

The Augusta Sports Council named Bird and 63 others to its midseason watch list on Thursday. He had also appeared on the preseason list, which featured 22 players identified as potential top punters in 2026.

The larger midseason group does not by itself show how Bird has performed, the report notes. It says he is in the nation’s top half of punters, while cautioning that many SEC backups might also rank there if given playing opportunities.

Bird’s punting numbers

Bird has punted 26 times this season, averaging 45.8 yards. That average ranks fifth in the SEC, while his longest punt, 60 yards, ranks ninth in the conference.

He has put nine punts inside the 20-yard line. The report says those kicks have helped Ole Miss change field position and support its defense, even though Bird is not described as one of the country’s most powerful punters.

A rare running play

Against Texas, Bird ran for a first down on a fake punt at an important point in the game. The play offered a glimpse of athleticism that punters do not often get to display.

Before coming to the United States, Bird played Australian Rules football for three years. The sport expects players to run with and kick the ball, experience the report links to his execution of the fake punt.

Award case and Georgia matchup

Bird ranks in the SEC’s back half for punt attempts, a measure the report says reflects well on Ole Miss’ offense but limits his chances to build an award case. It also says the award is not decided by punt volume alone.

Georgia punter Brett Thorson won last season after 46 punts, while USC’s Eddie Czaplicki won the previous year with 43. Bird’s four punts against Missouri were all placed inside the 20, and Ole Miss held the Tigers to three points. The report says his upcoming performance against Georgia could boost his award campaign.
