Rece Davis says CFP rankings show needs reimagining as bracket expands to 24

Davis questions the show’s future

After criticism of the season’s first rankings release, Davis discussed the program on The Pat McAfee Show. He expected considerable movement among teams as the season progresses, while avoiding direct criticism of the selection committee.

On The College GameDay Podcast Wednesday, Davis said he was unsure whether the show would continue. He added that he assumed it would remain because of the original contract, but expected it to feel different as the playoff field grows.

A larger field may change coverage

The CFP bracket is set to expand to 24 teams next season. Davis said the broadcast could become dry if it runs through all two dozen teams. Pete Thamel said he expects the rankings show to continue under the CFP’s updated agreement with ESPN. Davis nevertheless questioned how the format would work with the larger field.

Davis proposes a top-25 focus

Davis suggested the show avoid ranking teams beyond 25, even after the expansion. He floated opening with the first team left out of the field to create interest.

“It probably needs to be reimagined,” Davis said. He also questioned whether the program should begin its rundown at 35, while noting that viewers might welcome that approach.

The broadcast faces audience concerns

The show attracts millions of viewers and is seen as a way for the selection committee to answer for its decisions. But it has also become a source of tension at ESPN and across the industry.

Kirk Herbstreit left the broadcast early, while ESPN commentator Michael Wilbon has criticized the rankings show. With the field set to double, the program could risk becoming tedious for fans.
