Single ship breakdown cut US icebreaking in half as China encroaches dangerously close to land, exposing major vulnerability

A failure reduces Arctic capacity

The Coast Guard’s ability to operate in Arctic ice took a major hit when the Healy suffered an unexpected mechanical failure this summer. Little, commander of the Coast Guard Arctic District, said the breakdown halved his capability in the region.

The failure left Little with one icebreaker while four Chinese vessels operated nearby. Arctic waters can take days to reach, adding to the difficulty of maintaining a steady US presence.

Chinese vessels expand activity

Chinese research ships have been increasing their activity around Alaska, according to Little. Their operations help them build experience in the Arctic and collect data. Some of that information could have military applications, including for submarine operations. Little said he wants additional icebreakers as soon as possible, citing the operational environment.

Russia has a larger fleet

Together, the breakdown and the growing activity by Chinese vessels underscore the challenge of sustaining a US presence in the Arctic. Little said the Coast Guard needs more icebreakers to operate in those conditions.

Key points

  • The Healy’s mechanical failure cut the Coast Guard’s Arctic icebreaking capability in half this summer.
  • Chinese research ships are gaining Arctic experience and gathering data with possible military uses.
