Apple Intelligence on Mac: What It Is and How to Turn It Off

Apple Intelligence adds built-in AI to Mac, but in macOS 27 turning it off does not remove its files.

The short version

  • Apple set up Apple Intelligence as built-in AI tools for recent iPhone, iPad and Mac systems 4.
  • On Macs running version 27, switching the tools off leaves the AI files stored 1.
  • A volunteer-made script can switch the tools off, clear stored files and stop new downloads, with an undo option 1.
  • Past Apple updates have switched the tools back on for some Mac owners 3.

What is Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence is the name Apple gives to its own AI tools that live inside its systems 4. The idea is to help with everyday jobs like writing, sorting mail, summing up notes, making images and aiding Siri.

Apple shared the plan in June 2024 at its yearly developer meeting 4. It arrived with new versions of the iPhone, iPad and Mac systems 4. Owners of models that can run it pay no extra fee to use it 4.

Some work happens on the Mac itself. Some work uses Apple servers. That mix is why your Mac keeps large AI files on its drive 4. Those local files let apps answer fast and keep more data on the device. One test project, for example, tried to build a small helper that runs only with that local power and needs no paid plan 2.

Why does it still use space after you switch it off?

On older systems there was a clear off choice. In version 27 that one clear choice is gone 1. Even when you switch each tool off by hand, the large files remain saved.

Those saved files power text, pictures and other smart jobs 1. They cover the base language system plus extra parts for picture making, small cartoon faces, depth-style photos, photo tidy-up and code hints in Xcode 1.

Apple has not said in these sources how many gigabytes that means. The amount freed will differ by Mac, system build and which parts were fetched. That is why headlines about saving space can mislead. You may gain room, but no fixed number is promised here.

How can you switch it off in macOS 27?

A volunteer project on GitHub offers a path for people who want both steps done at once 1. In short, it turns each visible tool off, clears the stored AI files and tells the system not to fetch them again 1. The maker says you can undo all of it later 1.

The method does not place a lasting app on your Mac 1. It pulls a fresh copy, checks a safety code known as SHA-256, then runs from a short-term folder 1. Each public copy is made in an open auto-build step, with a record that links the file back to its source code 1.

When you start it, you first see a report of what is on or off 1. You are then asked to agree before anything changes 1. Next, System Settings opens so you can allow a settings file. The Mac asks for your okay in person, which is normal for this kind of change 1. Only then are the stored files cleared 1. Because this is not an Apple tool, take your time. Read the project page, back up your Mac and ask a trusted person for help if steps feel unclear.

What stops working if you remove it?

Many linked tools go quiet. Voice help through Siri goes off, with its wake phrase and top-bar mark 1. Writing help, smart replies in Mail, suggested words while you type and auto short notes across Mail, Messages, Safari, Notes and alerts also stop 1.

Picture and fun tools stop too. That means no cartoon face maker, no picture studio, no depth-style photos and no one-click object removal in Photos 1. The link to outside chat help and the code hints in Xcode also pause 1.

Voice typing is the main exception. The project notes that dictation lives under its own control and keeps working 1. Test helpers that need local Apple AI will also lose their engine until you bring the files back 2. One such helper was built to run inside a tight app box, with access only to what you allow, and to use far less power than big data centres 2.

Should you keep it or clear it away?

Think about space, ease and trust. If you like writing aid, short notes, tidy photos and a smarter voice helper, keeping the tools makes sense 4. They cost no extra on machines that support them 4. If your drive is full or you never use those extras, clearing them may feel calmer.

Also plan for updates. In early 2025 some owners said a fix update turned the tools back on after they had chosen off 3. The reports named Sequoia 15.3.1 on Mac and 18.3.1 on iPhone and iPad 3. Tests by one news site found iPhones and an iPad stayed off, while a small desktop Mac switched back on 3. A welcome screen after the restart seemed linked to the change 3.

As of October 5, 2026, the safest habit is simple. After each large update, open settings and check what is on. If you need firm advice, contact Apple Support or read Apple guides. For general safety tips, Sureno Explained also covers tech and online safety in plain words.

What we don't know yet

  • The exact room you will gain, since no source here gives a size and models change over time.
  • How Apple will handle the off choice in later Mac versions after October 5, 2026.
  • How well a settings file holds through future updates, and how often owners must check again.

Questions people ask

How do I turn off Apple Intelligence on Mac?

In version 27 there is no one master button, and hand switching leaves files behind 1. A volunteer script can turn each part off, clear the files and ask the system not to fetch them again 1. It asks for your approval first and can be undone 1.

Will turning off Apple Intelligence free disk space?

Using only built-in switches will likely leave the large files in place 1. The volunteer method aims to clear base files and extra parts for pictures, photos and code hints 1. No source here states a set gigabyte saving, so results will vary.

Is RemoveMacAI safe and reversible?

The maker says nothing stays installed and each copy is checked with a safety code before it runs 1. It shows the present state and waits for your yes 1. It still needs you to allow a settings file, so read each screen and keep a backup.

Why did Apple Intelligence turn back on after an update?

Some owners saw tools return after a fix release in February 2025, even though they had chosen off 3. A welcome screen after restart looked like a common trigger 3. The pattern did not hit every device in testing 3.

Does dictation still work without Apple Intelligence?

Yes, based on the project notes 1. Voice typing uses its own control, apart from the AI tool group 1. Switching the wider group off should leave that control as you set it 1.
