The short version

World Space Week is an annual celebration held October 4–10 to highlight space science and technology and their value to people ³⁴.
Schools, museums, space agencies and astronomy clubs may mark the week with activities such as talks, classes, exhibitions and stargazing ³.
Pokémon and the European Space Agency are drawing attention to the 2026 week with space-themed products and a limited-time Pokémon GO activity reported at participating museums in Europe ¹².
The sources do not provide a complete event calendar, so local activities and access details need to be checked with organisers.

What is World Space Week?

World Space Week is an annual international observance held from October 4 to October 10. It celebrates space science and technology and their contribution to people’s lives ³⁴.

The United Nations began observing the week in 1999, according to Al Jazeera. The observance connects the start of the Space Age, marked by the launch of Sputnik 1, with the coming into force of the Outer Space Treaty on October 10, 1967 ³.

Why are people talking about World Space Week 2026?

A Pokémon and European Space Agency collaboration has brought the week into entertainment and shopping headlines. Pokémon Center released space-themed trading-card accessories featuring Pikachu and other Pokémon, alongside several other themed product lines ².

Pokémon GO is also offering a time-limited Astronaut Pikachu, according to a report published October 5. The report says it can be found at participating science and space museums across Europe ¹. These stories are a specific collaboration, not the whole of World Space Week.

What happens during the week?

Activities can include stargazing nights, science classes, exhibitions, and talks by astronauts and scientists. Schools, space agencies, museums, and astronomy clubs are among the organisations that hold events ³.

There is no single activity everyone is expected to join. The sources describe a range of local events rather than one worldwide programme, so readers should look for announcements from museums, schools, astronomy clubs, or space agencies near them.

What does World Space Week mean for an ordinary reader?

It offers a reason to explore how space technology and research relate to everyday life. A local exhibition, class, or public talk may be an accessible way to learn, while the Pokémon collaboration gives some fans a familiar entry point into space themes ²³.

The week does not mean that every person needs to attend an event or buy anything. For someone interested in the Astronaut Pikachu activity, the available report points to participating museums in Europe, but does not give a full list of locations or explain all access requirements ¹.

What should readers check before making plans?

Event schedules, participation rules, and product availability can vary. The supplied sources do not include a complete calendar of World Space Week 2026 events or all details about the Pokémon GO activity.

Check the relevant museum or event organiser for local information. For the game activity or products, consult the official Pokémon or ESA channels for current details; the reports cited here do not establish availability in every location.
