North Korean monster movie featured in Mubi’s most slept series as Alejandro G. Iñárritu officially joins season 12

A new season of Mubi Podcast
Mubi Podcast, which explores how films are made, is set to return for its 12th season on November 12. The series began in 2021 and has run for eleven seasons.
Writer and radio broadcaster Rico Gagliano hosts the podcast. Previous seasons have covered international cinema, horror movies, famous flops and the cinema of David Lynch.
Under Pressure explores filmmaking
The new season is titled Under Pressure and focuses on films made in challenging circumstances, including amid political opposition. It will consist of five new episodes. Guests include Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Turkish writer-director Fatih Akin and filmmaker Ali Abbasi. Akin won the Golden Bear for Head-On, while Abbasi directed Holy Spider and The Apprentice.
Stories across five episodes
The opening episode will focus on Turkish actor and filmmaker Yılmaz Güney and his film Yol. Iñárritu and Akin will join Gagliano to discuss Güney, who made the film despite a 30-year prison sentence on what the article describes as dubious charges.
Episodes two and three will explore Pulgasari, a North Korean monster movie made by director Shin Sang-ok and actor Choi Eun-hee, a married couple kidnapped by Kim Jong-il. Author Paul Fischer, who wrote A Kim Jong-il Production, will appear across the two episodes.
The fourth episode will feature Julia Loktev discussing her two-part documentary My Undesirable Friends, about independent journalism in Russia. The article says the season ends with an episode featuring Abbasi, but does not provide further details.
