Blue Wave Midterms Pack a Punch for Tech, but Here’s Why a Knockout Isn’t Certain

Election results unsettle tech leaders

The Democratic gains in the 2026 midterms marked a setback for technology executives who had spent two years aligning with Republicans. The results were more than a public rebuke of a political party that many in tech had sought to please.

Elon Musk became a prominent example after spending $446 million to support Republicans, including $224 million in Texas, which turned blue. Tesla and SpaceX shares finished lower on Wednesday, though the political impact reaches beyond Musk.

Markets show a mixed response

Some AI-focused companies, including CoreWeave, Nebius and Iren, saw their stocks fall. But the broader tech sector finished the day higher, and Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Microsoft all gained.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite also rose, ending the day up 1.44%. The election’s political consequences therefore did not translate into a broad market decline that day.

Regulation and taxes remain uncertain

Some industry watchers have suggested that scrutiny from incoming lawmakers could lead AI companies to slow their spending. That pause could give other companies time to catch up and reduce the risk that supply grows beyond demand.

Companies may also cite regulation if they fall short of expectations. In California, early results show the “No” vote leading on Proposition 40, a proposed billionaire wealth tax, although the final tally is not yet available. A defeat would leave tech leaders with more money to spend in the next election.
