Inspection Delays MSC Poesia Departure as Coast Guard Detains Cruise Ship in Miami, Officials Say

Ship held during inspection

The MSC Poesia remains detained at the Port of Miami with passengers on board. Its itinerary is on hold while the Coast Guard carries out an inspection. The Coast Guard’s Miami sector detained the vessel on Sunday. In a statement Monday, the service said its teams were verifying compliance with international standards and U.S. regulations.

Safety and compliance priorities

The Coast Guard said verifying safe and secure commerce is part of its duty. It also said the Captain of the Port prioritizes the safety of passengers, crew, the vessel and the environment.

Cruise line updates guests

MSC Cruises said the ship’s departure was delayed while the Coast Guard inspected it at the dock. The company said it was cooperating with authorities and could not provide more information while the process continued.

The cruise line said it was keeping guests informed about the ship’s expected departure and thanked them for their patience. MSC Poesia can carry more than 3,200 passengers and over 1,000 crew members, but the number aboard now is unclear.
