Netflix’s 62 Episode Series: Lost Meets The Leftovers in a Mystery Masterclass

A rescue gives Manifest more time

Manifest began on NBC, where it ran for three seasons before cancellation. Netflix then revived the supernatural drama for one additional season, bringing its total to 62 episodes.

The series follows passengers and crew from Montego Air Flight 828, which disappeared for five years. They experienced only a brief moment, while the rest of the world believed they were gone.

Mysteries follow a clear framework

Manifest shares Lost’s expanding mythology and uses connected character histories and religious symbolism. But it gives its mysteries a more defined structure, built around recurring story devices. The characters experience “Callings,” mysterious visions that point them toward a task. A predicted “Death Date” adds urgency, while the central Flight 828 event links the show’s larger puzzles.

Answers and flaws shape the appeal

The show can rely heavily on explanation, particularly when characters describe their Callings. Its recurring terminology and weekly Calling format can also become repetitive, and its crowded storytelling sometimes tells viewers what is happening rather than showing it.

Even so, Manifest often promises direct answers and gradually delivers them. Its ideas of the Lifeboat and Callings also support themes of empathy and forgiveness. Netflix has ordered the spin-off Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery.
