Apple TV’s 19-Episode High-Concept Series Delivers a Masterclass in Hard Sci-Fi Tension

A Multiverse With Personal Stakes
Adapted by Blake Crouch from his novel, Dark Matter debuted in 2024 and stars Joel Edgerton as Jason Dessen, a physicist lost in another version of Earth. His route home takes him through realities shaped by possibilities he struggles to understand, while forcing him to confront the choices that formed his life.
At a time when multiverse stories are common, the series focuses on the intimate consequences of living among alternate realities. Rather than treating the premise as a playful adventure, it makes infinite possibility feel threatening and confining.
The Box Raises the Danger
The series’ central device, the Box, contains a corridor of doors to alternate realities. Reaching another world is easier than finding the one where loved ones remain, turning each crossing into a survival challenge.
The Box operates by rules that travelers do not fully understand. A person’s mental state helps determine which reality appears, so fear can affect the journey itself. Jason must try to manage his reactions even as the circumstances give him reason to panic.
A Thrill Built on Uncertainty
Jason’s desperation to get home makes it harder for him to find his way there. Some versions of Earth are unsafe, and even apparently welcoming places can conceal danger for travelers who stay too long.
The Box does not simply solve problems; its workings create new ones. That design sustains the suspense while keeping the science-fiction premise central to the story’s tension.
Alternate Selves, Different Choices
The series also uses Jason’s alternate selves to explore envy and regret. Jason 2, a version of the physicist from another reality, becomes a major antagonist. Jason 2 has achieved professional success but lost his marriage and family. After discovering a world where he could have the domestic life he wanted, he treats Jason’s life as something he can take, putting the two versions of the character in conflict over the consequences of their choices.
