Arizona State’s New Coach: Everything Dave Hakstol Said During His Introductory Press Conference in Tempe

A special opportunity in Tempe
Athletic Director Graham Rossini introduced Hakstol at the press conference. Hakstol thanked Rossini and President Crow for their leadership, saying the position was an important opportunity for him and his family.
He said he was excited to join the players and work toward a successful season while establishing a foundation for the program’s future. Hakstol pointed to the work already done by people involved with the program, including alumni. He said Arizona State’s move toward full membership in the NCHC brings challenges as well as opportunities to grow the program and pursue championship-level success year after year.
Changes across college hockey
Hakstol said player movement and NIL payments bring benefits for players, while making roster continuity more challenging. He said those changes also make it important for the program to do right by its players.
He described today’s college hockey as highly skilled and dynamic. Hakstol said the opening of the sport to CHL players has made more talent available, and he estimated that the level of play may be 20% or 25% better than it was a few years ago.
Returning to the NCHC
Hakstol said returning to the NCHC was special. He recalled early discussions about forming the conference, when a small group used yellow legal pads to map out a plan as Big Ten hockey threatened to reshape the WCHA.
He said the effort to establish the league initially seemed daunting, but people brought it together quickly. Hakstol praised the NCHC’s national success.
Leading players through transition
Hakstol said he found players who wanted coaching and were seeking leadership. He said his role was to guide them off the ice and provide direction and coaching on it, adding that he had kept the approach straightforward.
He said he was aware of some matters the players might be dealing with but did not want to make assumptions. Instead, he said, he addressed issues directly on a daily basis.
