Lincoln Williams’ Illinois Basketball Role: 2026-27 Scouting Report Highlights Shooting and Defense

Athletic tools and offensive role

At 6-foot-5 and 180 pounds, Williams brings size, length and strong leaping ability to the wing. Those traits can help him cut, attack from the perimeter and contribute near the basket.

He is not a ball-dominant player, which suits the Illini roster. Driving closeouts and pursuing offensive rebounds could give him ways to contribute as a freshman, even if he is not a major scorer.

High school record and Baylor showing

Williams, from Kankakee, Illinois, holds his high school’s career, season and game scoring records. As a senior, he averaged 26.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.0 blocks, and earned first-team all-state honors.

In Illinois’ exhibition loss to Baylor, Williams helped fuel a near comeback. He defended guard Kayden Mingo, made plays on the offensive glass and scored a couple of baskets, including a dunk.

Defense may shape his minutes

Williams’ length, agility and effort could make him a disruptive on-ball defender, with the ability to cover positions 1 through 3. How well he handles off-ball defense may be just as important to his playing time.

If he learns Illinois’ defensive principles, communicates reliably and understands rotations, he could earn minutes off the bench. He may also be an option when the team needs to slow an opposing guard.

Coach sees room to grow

Illinois coach Brad Underwood said Williams has been receptive and coachable, and praised his athletic gifts and consistent effort. Underwood also described Williams as working hard in strength and conditioning.

His three-point shooting remains an open question, as does his effectiveness away from the ball on defense. Those areas could substantially affect his outlook for the 2026-27 season.
