Six first-period shots couldn't beat Connor Hellebuyck, who wastes no time in electric Devils debut, almost earning shutout

A strong opening period

Hellebuyck, formerly with the Winnipeg Jets, appeared for the Devils against the Stars on Tuesday night. New Jersey's defense allowed just six shots in the opening period, and Hellebuyck turned aside each attempt. The Devils went into the first intermission ahead 1-0, giving their new goaltender an early lead to protect.

Shutout narrowly missed

Hellebuyck stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced and secured his first win with New Jersey. He came close to a shutout in his debut but did not record one.

Sam St. Laurent and Mike McKenna were identified as the only goalies to have posted shutouts in their Devils debuts. Hellebuyck's performance nevertheless made for an electric start with the team.

A promising team effort

The Devils' ability to restrict the Stars' chances helped Hellebuyck deliver a sparkling debut. The team also provided enough offense to hold its lead and earn the victory.
