Longtime Nebraska play announcer Kent Pavelka plans to retire following 2026-2027 season

A decision after decades on air

Pavelka shared his retirement plans during a Monday evening appearance on the Huskers Radio Network. He said, “It’s time,” while acknowledging that making the announcement was difficult. He said he intends to enjoy his final season and celebrate the memories made while traveling with the team. His immediate focus, he added, is Nebraska basketball and the team’s pursuit of a successful season.

A career across two sports

Pavelka began his Husker radio career at KFAB in 1974, providing football color commentary through 1983. He became the football play-by-play announcer in 1984 and held the role through 1996.

He also began calling Nebraska men’s basketball in 1974, initially remaining in that role until 1996. Pavelka returned to the basketball broadcasts in 2006 and continues to call games.

Recognition from Nebraska

Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen wrote on X that the university looks forward to honoring Pavelka later this season. Dannen praised the longtime broadcaster’s passion and its connection with Husker supporters.
