Blake Fagbemi’s Illinois Basketball 2026-27 Scouting Report: Can He Earn Regular Minutes?

A playmaker with defensive energy

Fagbemi is a quick, athletic point guard whose effort and basketball IQ help offset his lack of size. With the ball, he uses court vision and ball-handling to set up teammates and control the pace, while his quickness gives him a way to attack the basket.

On defense, he pressures opposing guards with quick feet and active hands. Though undersized, he is willing to play physically against bigger opponents. His main strengths are playmaking, defensive effort and contributing without needing to score.

From Benet to Illinois

At Benet Academy, Fagbemi helped the Redwings post a 33-5 record and win the 2025 IHSA Class 4A state championship. As a senior, he averaged 12.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game, and was named East Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year.

He first committed to Division II Truman State, then chose to stay close to home and join Brad Underwood’s Illinois program. Underwood described him as a strong competitor who understands his role and makes the most of his opportunity.

A limited freshman season

In 2025-26, Fagbemi appeared in 11 games and logged 40 minutes, recording two points, 11 rebounds, four assists and one steal. His most substantial outing came in his college debut against Jackson State: two points, three rebounds and an assist in 14 minutes. Although he rarely played, he gained practice experience against high-major competition and was part of Illinois’ Final Four team.

A crowded path to minutes

Fagbemi faces another challenge for playing time in Year 2, with Providence transfer Stefan Vaaks and freshmen Quentin Coleman, Ethan Brown, Lincoln Williams and Lucas Morillo among the backcourt options. Significant minutes may be hard to find in a deep rotation.

His defense and ability to run an offense can still make him useful in practice as he develops. If Coleman is unavailable, Fagbemi is arguably Illinois’ only other pure point guard, though whether his skills translate to a consistent Big Ten role remains uncertain.

Developing his outside shot and adapting to Big Ten physicality are priorities. With three seasons of eligibility left, he has time to pursue a larger role.

Key points

  • Fagbemi’s strengths include passing, defensive intensity and contributing without scoring.
  • He averaged 12.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.6 assists as a Benet Academy senior.
  • As a freshman, he played 11 games and totaled 40 minutes for Illinois.
  • A crowded backcourt may limit his minutes as he works on his outside shot and Big Ten adjustment.
