First Look: Illinois Football Faces Week 9 Opponent Maryland Terrapins After Oregon Win

Maryland Seeks a Reset

Maryland began the 2026 season with two wins, but has since lost five consecutive games. The slide included a 54-3 defeat to UCLA and losses to Nebraska and Ohio State.

The latest setback came Oct. 17, when the Terrapins let a 23-13 halftime lead slip away in a 37-30 home loss to Rutgers. Mike Locksley left the program on Oct. 21 after eight seasons, and co-defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim will serve as interim head coach.

Maryland also dismissed defensive coordinator Ted Monachino after the Rutgers game. The team had a bye week before facing Illinois, giving it time to regroup ahead of Abdul-Rahim’s first game.

Washington Leads the Offense

Sophomore quarterback Malik Washington has thrown for 1,615 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions through seven games. He passed for 263 yards and two touchdowns against Rutgers. Receiver Chris Durr Jr. leads Maryland with 52 catches, 580 yards and four touchdowns. The Terrapins average 133 rushing yards per game; DeJuan Williams has gained 281 yards and scored three touchdowns on 38 carries. Maryland averages 28.3 points per game, though much of that scoring came in its two non-conference wins.

Defense Has Allowed Big Scores

Freshman edge rusher Zion Elee has recorded 2.5 sacks and forced two fumbles. Defensive lineman Sidney Stewart has also helped generate pressure, but the unit has struggled to prevent opponents from scoring. The defensive difficulties could give Illinois an opening to sustain the momentum it found against Oregon.

Illinois Aims to Keep Momentum

Illinois improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play with its 21-10 upset of Oregon. The Illini head to College Park looking for a third straight victory and a step toward bowl eligibility.

True freshman quarterback Michael Clayton II earned his first win as a starter against Oregon, while running back Aidan Laughery rushed for 123 yards. Both could have chances against a Maryland defense that has struggled this season.

Illinois still faces a Maryland team making its first game under an interim head coach. Bret Bielema’s team will need to avoid a letdown after its win over Oregon.
