Jenna Ortega’s Sci-Fi Film Officially Dropped From 1,000 Theaters

Fewer theaters than projected
Klara and the Sun opened today in 880 theaters across North America. Earlier this month, The Numbers had projected a release in 1,900 locations, making the actual count substantially lower.
The smaller rollout comes alongside a difficult reception from critics. The film currently has a 24% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
A story about Klara
The film adapts the bestselling novel by Nobel Prize-winner Kazuo Ishiguro. It follows Klara, an Artificial Friend whose greatest wish is to find the right home. Klara meets Josie, and the two recognize a connection. Josie has a strained relationship with her mother and has experienced great loss; Klara’s loyalty and sense of wonder help bring light to the family’s difficult circumstances.
Ortega leads the cast
Ortega plays Klara, with Mia Tharia as Josie and Amy Adams as Josie’s mother. Aran Murphy plays Rick, while Steve Buscemi is also among the cast. The film is directed by Taiki Waititi, whose earlier work includes a hit Marvel movie and an Oscar-winning World War II film. A Star Wars project associated with him has reportedly been put on hold.
