Maradona doctor made a scapegoat over death, Argentinian court told in closing arguments

Luque’s defence at trial

In closing arguments, Luque’s lawyer said there was no way to foresee the fatal outcome. Attorney Oneto argued that Maradona had no heart problems in 2020, while Rallin said Luque’s innocence was supported by evidence, not television slogans.

The defence team challenged findings by an interdisciplinary medical commission set up by the court in 2021 to assess Maradona’s death. Lawyers presented audio recordings and scientific articles, and played a video of the autopsy, angering Maradona’s daughters.

Prosecution alleges inaction

Prosecutors accused Luque of failing to act as Maradona displayed warning signs. In its closing arguments, the prosecution said his response was consistently to do nothing and requested a 12-year prison term.

Seven healthcare professionals have been on trial since April over potential negligence during Maradona’s two-week convalescence. The case concerns whether their conduct contributed to his death in 2020.

Another defendant faces sentence

Forlini faces a possible 10-year sentence for homicide with intent. Prosecutors allege he failed to provide basic medical equipment for Maradona’s home care. Maradona’s death brought Argentina’s favourite son to national mourning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Luque’s legal team has maintained that the doctor was not responsible for the fatal outcome.
