Lanka chase 430 to beat England despite Harry Brook’s record 202

Brook sets a new benchmark
Brook scored 202, surpassing Ben Stokes’ previous England ODI best of 182. He reached his double hundred from 114 balls, the fastest such score in ODI history. His innings gathered pace after a slow start: Brook had 13 runs from his first 24 deliveries, reached 50 off 42 balls and completed his century in 75. England added 156 in the final 10 overs.
Sri Lanka take on 430
Sri Lanka chose to bat second and pressed on with the chase despite slipping to 24-2. Their successful pursuit was the second-highest in ODI history; only South Africa have won after scoring more than Sri Lanka’s 430.
With six needed from two balls, Liyanage hit Josh Tongue’s penultimate delivery for six to seal the win. Tongue had taken two wickets in succession, bowling Dinuth Wellalage and Eshan Malinga.
England bowling comes under pressure
England’s bowling was described as woeful, with Jofra Archer rested for the tri-series and Adil Rashid omitted for tactical reasons. Sam Curran conceded 103 runs in nine overs.
Gus Atkinson bowled seven of his allotted 10 overs, while Tongue was only into his ninth when the match reached its final over. The match produced 123 boundaries in total: 93 fours and 30 sixes, an ODI record.
Brook reflects on defeat
Brook, England’s captain, called the loss “Heart-breaking” and said the team had not defended 430. He said England knew where they had gone wrong and would discuss it over the next few days.
Brook also said England had “almost too much batting for an ODI team,” naming Sam Curran, Jordan Cox, Jamie Overton and Liam Dawson. England had a chance in its next two games to try to reach the final in Lahore.
