Pre-production Mass Effect: Universe trailer leaks following BioWare shutdown; Mass Effect 5 fate unclear
Trailer surfaces on Reddit
The video appeared on Reddit the day after EA shut down BioWare and canceled the studio’s new Mass Effect game. Its opening message describes the footage as in-engine and the assets as pre-production.
The trailer follows an ex-soldier talking with a mysterious Asari at a bar. It also includes a flashback to a fight and ends with the title Mass Effect: Universe.
Reports support its authenticity
The Verge report describes the trailer as apparently genuine. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier said it was a real trailer for the Mass Effect game BioWare had been developing until the studio’s closure.
IGN also said it had verified the video as legitimate. The story does not identify who posted the trailer on Reddit.
Franchise plans continue
The game shown in the trailer has been canceled. The trailer nevertheless offers a look at the project, including human and alien characters, brief action sequences, and a cameo by a prominent character from the original trilogy. Amazon is reportedly still working on a Mass Effect TV show for Prime Video, leaving another planned way for the franchise’s stories to reach audiences.
