Lego fraudster among last year's most high-profile insurance scammers

A man jailed for making false home insurance claims about stolen Lego was named among the UK’s most prominent insurance fraudsters of 2025 by the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Other cases highlighted included a man who persuaded women he met online to take part in staged car crashes, and another who made fraudulent travel medical claims worth more than £300,000.

The ABI recorded £1.34bn in fraudulent claims in 2025, up 14% from the £1.18bn detected the year before. Its figures show exaggerated losses were the most frequent type, with 26,900 cases.

The ABI said the proportion of detected fraud fell slightly, but fraudsters were seeking larger payouts. City of London Police said insurance fraud can push up premiums for legitimate customers.

Police said collectible Lego matching items claimed as stolen was found in the man’s home during a 2023 search. The ABI’s figures and case examples underline the financial scale of fraud and its impact on policyholders.
