Jeffries says House Democrats aiming to repeat 2018 sweep by flipping Trump districts

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said Sunday that his party believes it can win back the House in the Nov. 3 midterm elections. He compared the effort with Democrats’ successful 2018 campaign, when they took control of the chamber.

Jeffries argued that Democrats can compete in conservative districts that supported Donald Trump. He is expected to become House speaker if his party wins a majority.

The race is tight: Republicans have more campaign funds, and Speaker Mike Johnson is aligning the party more closely with Trump. With the House narrowly divided, a small number of seats could decide control.

Democrats are trying to broaden their targets. Their campaign organization recently added eight districts, including seats in Kansas, Oklahoma, Virginia and Washington state. Jeffries also said Republican redistricting efforts in several states had misfired in some places.

Trump is campaigning to energize Republican voters, while high gas prices linked to the war with Iran are putting pressure on his party. Early voting has begun, and Jeffries urged Democrats not to assume victory is assured.

Key points

  • Jeffries sees a path for Democrats to regain the House by contesting Trump-won districts.
  • Republicans have a fundraising edge, while Democrats have expanded their list of targeted districts.
  • The House majority may hinge on a few seats; early voting is underway.
