The Blue Planet and Gandhi composer George Fenton dies aged 76

George Fenton, whose compositions featured in films including Gandhi, Groundhog Day and The Fisher King, has died at 76. His television work included Planet Earth, Bergerac and Blue Planet.

His Blue Planet music received Bafta, Emmy and Ivor Novello recognition. He also wrote theme music for BBC programmes including Newsnight and Breakfast Time.

Born George Howe in Bromley, Kent, in 1949, he took the name Fenton when he began acting, following union rules about performers sharing names. He appeared in Alan Bennett’s 1968 West End play Forty Years On.

Fenton began his career performing and briefly pursued solo music, including a Swedish top 10 cover of The Beatles’ Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. Most of his career was spent composing, though he said he valued playing for live audiences.

He is survived by his wife Amanda, former wife Jane, three children and six grandchildren, according to the article.
