Wakefield Trinity reach Super League Grand Final two years after promotion from second tier

Wakefield Trinity have reached the Super League Grand Final and will meet Warrington Wolves in the title match. The club is now one game away from becoming champions, two years after promotion from the Championship.

Their rise has come under owner Matt Ellis, with head coach Daryl Powell guiding the team. Wakefield finished fourth in the league before beating Wigan in the semi-final.

Wigan had won 16 matches in a row and were chasing another domestic treble, so Wakefield were considered underdogs. Tom Johnstone scored two of his side’s five tries in the win.

Johnstone said a Grand Final appearance had long seemed unlikely. Powell credited the development of new signings and players already at the club for the team’s progress.

The final will be played at Old Trafford, where Powell will face Warrington, a club he coached before leaving midway through the 2023 season. Powell has previously led a team to the final, with Castleford losing to Leeds in 2017.
