Quiet a squeaky hinge

Lift one hinge pin, wipe it, and put back a thin film of oil or a rub of dry soap.

Tools you need

  • Hammer
  • Nail or a flat screwdriver
  • Light household oil or a dry bar of soap
  • Rag
  • A second person, or a door wedge

Steps

  1. Open the door so you can reach the hinge barrels. Have someone hold the door, or wedge it so it cannot swing.

  2. Work one hinge at a time. Set a nail under the pin head, or a screwdriver in the hole at the bottom of the barrel, and tap the pin up only far enough to pull it out by hand.

  3. Wipe the pin. Add a thin film of oil, or rub it on a dry bar of soap. Keep oil off the painted door.

  4. Push the pin back down until it sits flush. Swing the door.

  5. If it still squeaks, treat the next hinge the same way. Wipe any oil off the floor.
