The short version

Jagex announced an animated series based on RuneScape on October 3, 2026; it is in early development, not yet a finished or released show. ²
Lyrical Animation and Charlie “MoistCr1TiKaL” White are partnering with Jagex, and Lyrical Animation will produce it alongside White’s Meatier Productions. ²
The project aims to bring the game’s fantasy world of Gielinor to the screen, but its plot, format, cast and release plans have not been shared. ²
Jagex says more details are expected in 2027, so viewers should treat current descriptions as an early announcement rather than a guide to what the final series will be. ²

What is the RuneScape animated series?

It is a planned animated screen adaptation of RuneScape, the fantasy online role-playing game developed and published by Jagex. The game is set in Gielinor, a medieval fantasy world where players take on quests, fight, explore and play alongside others. ²

Jagex says work has begun, but the project is at an early stage. The announcement describes an effort to bring the game’s world to the screen; it does not yet lay out a particular story or confirm what the finished series will look like. ²

Who is making the RuneScape show?

The announced partners are game developer Jagex, animation company Lyrical Animation and creator Charlie “MoistCr1TiKaL” White. Lyrical Animation will produce the project alongside White’s company, Meatier Productions. ²

Jagex CEO Jon Bellamy announced the project at RuneFest in Birmingham, following the Old School RuneScape keynote. ² The announcement identifies the partners, but does not describe each person’s or company’s specific creative duties.

Why are people talking about it now?

The series was announced at RuneFest on October 3, 2026, alongside news of a separate new RuneScape MMO. That other game is in early development and has the working title RS4; it is not the animated series. ¹²³

The timing puts two different projects in the headlines: one intended as a game and one intended to bring RuneScape to the screen. The series announcement also brings together a long-running game franchise and a prominent online creator, but its details remain limited. ²

What could the series mean for an ordinary reader?

For someone who has never played RuneScape, the announcement is simply news of a fantasy animation project in development. The game’s broad setting and activities are described, but there is not enough information yet to know whether the series will be easy to follow without knowing the games. ²

For players, an adaptation could offer another way to encounter the world of Gielinor. That is a possibility, not a confirmed promise about the show’s plot, tone or connection to events in the games. No action is needed from readers now: the series has no announced release plan in the available information. ²

When will it come out, and what is still unknown?

Jagex’s announcement says further details are expected in 2027. It does not give a release date or identify a broadcaster or streaming service. ²

The announcement also does not specify the episode count, animation style, voice cast, intended audience or story. Until Jagex or its partners provide more information, claims about those details would be guesses.

What we don't know yet

The series’ release date, platform and episode count have not been announced. ²
Its story, animation style, voice cast and intended audience are not specified. ²
The announcement does not say how closely the series will follow the games or whether viewers will need prior knowledge of RuneScape.
