Where it comes from
Welcome is Old English wilcuma, a guest you wanted to see arrive, from wil, wish or will, and cuma, a comer. The greeting meant: you are the guest we wished for. Later spelling was pulled toward well, so the word can look like well come. The old meaning is about the wish.
