Where it comes from
The origin of penguin is unsettled. English used the word for the great auk, a northern seabird, before sailors met the birds of the southern oceans, and the name moved across. One old guess is Welsh pen gwyn, white head. Other guesses exist. The word is older than the Antarctic bird it names now.
