Where it comes from
Calm came into English from Italian calma and Spanish calma, still weather, especially at sea. Those words go back to Latin cauma, from Greek kauma, burning heat. In the Mediterranean the hottest hour was when the wind dropped. The word for that heat became the word for a quiet sea, and then for a quiet mind.
