A 60th-Anniversary Star Trek Set Officially Returns Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan in Federation Fleet

Guinan’s Star Trek Legacy

Guinan first appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1988, portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg. She worked as a bartender aboard the Enterprise-D, but her wisdom, mysterious past and friendship with Captain Jean-Luc Picard made her a central presence.

Having lived for centuries, Guinan has unusual abilities, including awareness of changes to the timeline. She is also among the few characters able to stand up to the omnipotent Q. Goldberg later reprised the role in Star Trek: Picard.

A New Guinan Card

Goldberg’s Guinan is featured in the Federation Fleet Commander deck, part of the Magic: The Gathering and Star Trek crossover. The card, titled “Guinan, Ancient Advisor,” has artwork by Nicky Barkla and is classified as a rare Legendary Creature — El-Aurian Advisor. The card’s flavor text reads, “Human intuition and instinct are not always right, but they do make life interesting.” The ability is presented as an expression of Guinan’s wisdom and her capacity to strengthen others.
