Seventh straight Women’s final: New Zealand sweep Samoa aside to reach Rugby League World Cup 2026

New Zealand secure final place
New Zealand handled difficult, windy conditions to defeat Samoa and book a place in the Women’s World Cup final. The match was played at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle, New South Wales.
The result gives the Kiwi Ferns a seventh consecutive appearance in the showpiece match. Their record includes three victories from 2000 to 2008, followed by three final defeats.
Waaka makes decisive impact
As storm clouds gathered, Stacey Waaka took advantage of hesitation from Samoa winger Mercedez Taulelei-Siala. She gathered and grounded a kick from Raecene McGregor. Waaka, who has represented New Zealand in rugby sevens, union and league, was a major influence as her side found its attacking rhythm. Her display stood out in a back line that also includes Mele Hufanga.
Samoa struggle to respond
Samoa had difficulty turning field position into points, and handling errors also helped New Zealand build control. Fanua Rimoni was a strong presence at lock, while teenager Anastasia Leatupue made her international debut with a composed performance.
Despite those contributions, Samoa could not match New Zealand’s attacking threat. Kaiyah Atai also scored just over two minutes after an earlier try as New Zealand increased the pressure.
