Susan Is Missing From Aslan’s Country: Narnia’s Most Debated Ending May Not Be the Problem Fans Think

Susan’s Missing Place

Near the end of The Last Battle, Peter, Edmund, Lucy, Eustace, Jill, Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer reach Narnia to help King Tirian. After Peter banishes Tash, Aslan welcomes those faithful to him into Aslan’s Country. Susan is not among them.

The others have died in a train accident in their world, along with Mr. and Mrs. Pevensie. Susan is left behind, separated from her family. The novel does not explain what ultimately happens to her.

A Change in Susan

At the end of Prince Caspian, Aslan tells Peter and Susan they will not return to Narnia. Peter remains attached to their years as Narnian royalty, while Susan appears to put that past aside. In The Last Battle, Eustace says she now regards Narnia as childhood play; Jill says her interests center on clothes and social invitations.

Polly argues that Susan had spent her school years wishing to be older and now needs to grow up in a deeper sense. The story’s portrayal connects her absence to a pattern that appears earlier in the series, rather than presenting it as a sudden change.

Earlier Signs of Doubt

In The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Susan doubts Lucy’s account of Narnia, even after Professor Kirke encourages her to consider it. Once there, Susan repeatedly wants to return home and at one point considers leaving Mr. Tumnus to the White Witch.

In Prince Caspian, Susan is the last of the children to see Aslan and initially resists Lucy’s claim that he is nearby. Susan later admits she could have believed Aslan was calling them if she had let herself. Aslan tells her that fear had clouded her faith.

What Narnia Was For

The article’s interpretation is that Narnia served as spiritual preparation for recognizing Christ beyond the fantasy world. Susan’s difficulty trusting what she cannot see helps explain why her story diverges from the others, though the novel leaves her future open.

Key points

  • Susan is absent when the other Friends of Narnia enter Aslan’s Country in The Last Battle.
  • Her family and friends die in a train accident, while Susan remains in their world.
  • Earlier books show Susan repeatedly doubting Lucy and struggling to trust Aslan.
  • Aslan says the Narnian adventures can help the children know him in their own world.
