Biggest Winners and Losers: Atlanta Hawks’ NBA Cup Win Over the Wizards

Dort makes a statement

Luguentz Dort had a breakout performance while filling in as Atlanta’s starting power forward. After struggling to adapt to a new role and situation earlier in the season, he showed signs of progress.

Okongwu seals the win

Onyeka Okongwu continued a strong run, averaging a double-double over his previous five games and contributing on both ends against Washington. His defense helped Atlanta hold on late.

Okongwu finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, shooting 66% from the field, 66% from three-point range and 100% from the free-throw line. He sealed the victory with a late steal on Trae Young’s alley-oop attempt.

Daniels impacts both ends

Dyson Daniels nearly recorded a triple-double, combining efficient scoring with playmaking and rebounding. He also helped limit Young as Atlanta repeatedly picked him up near half-court and trapped him. Daniels recorded 13 points, 12 assists, nine rebounds and two steals while shooting 66% from the field.

McCollum and Newell miss chances

CJ McCollum had difficulty finding his shot in a bench role. He had moved out of the starting lineup after Wednesday’s game, with rookie Kingston Flemings taking over; McCollum said the change could give Flemings valuable experience and confidence.

McCollum shot 1-for-10 and finished with four points, four assists and three rebounds. Asa Newell, meanwhile, could not benefit from the opportunity for more playing time because he injured his ankle in the previous game against Washington.
