East Texas A&M has already delivered the first stunning upset of the 2026-27 college basketball season

A major underdog victory
East Texas A&M entered the season projected to finish at the bottom of the Southland Conference. The Lions nevertheless came away with a win over Oklahoma. ESPN ranked the result as the second-largest upset among more than 100,000 NCAA Division I games in the past 30 years. The only less likely outcome in that period, according to oddsmakers, was Eastern Illinois beating 30.5-point favorite Iowa in 2022.
Three-point edge for Lions
The Lions did not lead Oklahoma in every statistical category, but they shot better from beyond the arc. East Texas A&M made 41 percent of its three-pointers, compared with 25 percent for the Sooners.
Bo Aldridge scored a game-high 22 points in 25 minutes, making eight of his 12 shots. Mohamed Diakite and Alonzo Dodd each added 15 points, while Pop Isaacs led Oklahoma with 15.
Oklahoma streak comes to an end
The defeat snapped Oklahoma’s 30-game nonconference home winning streak. It was also only the Sooners’ second loss in a season opener in 24 seasons. Oklahoma coach Porter Moser apologized to fans and said the team needed to improve. He said the Sooners played on their heels throughout the game and that their performance was not good enough.
Coach sees room to improve
East Texas A&M coach Jaret von Rosenberg praised his players for making important plays late. He also said the win was far from perfect. Von Rosenberg pointed to the Lions’ first-half defense, which held Oklahoma to 29 percent shooting, as a factor that gave his team a chance to win. He said the performance was not the best the Lions could deliver.
