Germany deportations decline nearly 19%, while returns to Turkey rise

Deportations fall overall
The figures were released after a request from the Left Party. Turkey was the most common destination, followed by Georgia and Algeria.
Turkey and Syria differ
Deportations to Turkey went against the wider downward trend: 2,025 people were sent there. The ministry’s figures also showed that returns to Syria remain limited amid the political situation there. Six people have been returned to Syria since the beginning of 2026, including people described in the report as convicted criminals.
More voluntary returns
The number of foreign nationals receiving assistance to leave Germany voluntarily rose slightly. In 2026, 14,140 people received help to return to their countries of origin, compared with 12,263 the year before.
Volkswagen trial ahead
More than ten years after the Dieselgate scandal, a new trial is scheduled to begin against former Volkswagen executives. The report did not provide further details about the case.
