Joe Cruz’s Send-Off Gets Lost as Chicago Fire Fasttracks Its 300th Episode’s Death by a Thousand Cuts

A rare television milestone

Chicago Fire reached its 300th episode after 14 years on air, a longevity made less common by shorter TV seasons. The series debuted in 2012 and helped launch Chicago PD and Chicago Med.

The show has previously marked major milestones with stories that looked back or pointed toward what came next. Episodes including “One Hundred,” “The Plunge,” “Two Hundred” and “Inside Man” carried larger, more consequential narratives, while “Three Hundred” centers on a major change at Firehouse 51.

Cruz’s send-off lacks focus

Season 15, episode 5 is Joe Minoso’s final outing as Joe Cruz, one of the few cast members who has been on the series since its first season. His departure follows a storyline about paralysis and an effort to return to work.

The episode begins with Cruz doing considerably better, and Chicago Med’s Dean Archer tells him he should soon be back at Firehouse 51. That setup creates an expectation of a farewell that honors Cruz’s history and gives his departure a clear rationale, but the installment’s multiple plots dilute that focus.

Family crisis complicates return

Cruz’s wife, Chloe, is the only one opposed to his return, and she gives birth to their twins early amid stress about managing the family. The episode presents her concern as fear of taking on everything herself, but the review argues that the reveal is poorly handled.

Cruz then has no path back to work, while the story unfolds apart from the close-knit Firehouse 51 team. Kelly Severide tries to persuade him to stay, but the review describes that effort as self-serving and says the episode does little to support Cruz’s family beyond the possibility of returning to Squad 3.

Key points

  • Chicago Fire’s 300th episode also marks Joe Minoso’s final appearance as Joe Cruz.
  • The episode’s many simultaneous plots weaken the focus on Cruz’s farewell.
  • Chloe’s stress and the early birth of the twins derail Cruz’s planned return to work.
  • The story offers little support from Firehouse 51 for Cruz and his family.
