Goodbye Ocean’s Eleven: Ben Affleck’s Heist Thriller Is Officially Streaming

A Heist Returns to Streaming

Reindeer Games, the 2000 holiday thriller starring Ben Affleck, is now available on Paramount+. It had long been offered only as a rental. The film failed to recoup its budget and drew harsh criticism. Yet its unusual plot and John Frankenheimer’s direction have prompted renewed interest in the overlooked release.

A Casino Robbery Takes Shape

Affleck plays Rudy, an ex-con who takes on the identity of his dead cellmate, Nick, after leaving prison. He becomes involved with Ashley, played by Charlize Theron, who had been Nick’s pen pal but had never met him.

Ashley’s brother, played by Gary Sinise, wants Nick to help rob a casino run by Dennis Farina. The plan leads to a series of betrayals, a frozen-lake shootout and a parade of Santa suits.

Frankenheimer’s Forceful Direction

The film’s story, written by Ehren Kruger, stacks up twists, gunfire and Christmas references. Frankenheimer, known for The Manchurian Candidate and Ronin, delivers brisk action despite the unruly material.

Frankenheimer said he wanted the story to be even more complicated. He also said he had hoped to make the film more sexually explicit and violent, but the MPAA required cuts of more than 20 minutes.

Theron’s Blunt Assessment

Theron later called the film a failure, while explaining that working with Frankenheimer was why she took the role. She said, “That was a bad, bad, bad movie,” and praised the director’s earlier work.

The cast also includes Danny Trejo, Isaac Hayes and Ron Jeremy. Reindeer Games remains a messy, violent holiday oddity, but its unusual turns and energetic direction give it a distinct appeal.
