Chris Murphy hospitalized following stroke, office says he is responding well

Hospitalization and treatment

Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm Saturday afternoon while at his son’s hockey game, according to a statement from his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he had experienced a stroke.

Murphy was later transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring. Herwitt said he is responding well to treatment and expected to make a full recovery.

Murphy’s political profile

The 53-year-old Democrat represents Connecticut and is a prominent figure in his party. He has served as a campaign surrogate for candidates during the midterm cycle and has been viewed as a possible 2028 presidential contender.

Murphy has developed a profile as a foreign policy leader and advocate for strong oversight of the executive branch. He recently returned from a multistop Middle East tour and warned that President Trump would dramatically escalate the war on Iran after the midterm election.

Other lawmakers’ health issues

In 2022, three prominent Democratic lawmakers were hospitalized for strokes: Sen. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and then-Senate candidate John Fetterman.
