Top Gun: Maverick Officially Flies High Again With a Massive Streaming Comeback

A blockbuster’s long flight
Top Gun: Maverick remains a major draw four years after its theatrical release. At the time of writing, it ranked fourth among movies watched on Paramount+ worldwide, behind Diablo, Passenger and the latest Scary Movie installment.
The film’s theatrical success was exceptional: it earned $1.45 billion worldwide on a reported budget of $177 million. Its popularity in theaters also led to it being cited as a film that helped save cinema after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The team behind Maverick
Tom Cruise stars in the sequel, which was directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Christopher McQuarrie. McQuarrie also directed Cruise in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning last year.
Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro and Glen Powell also appear in the film. The combination of its cast and established blockbuster talent helped drive its success at the box office.
A contrasting result for Cruise
Cruise’s recent film Digger had a very different theatrical run. Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s satirical black comedy, his first English-language film since The Revenant, earned less than $50 million worldwide against a reported $125 million budget.
The story describes Digger as Cruise’s first non-franchise headlining film since American Made in 2017. It also says the film struggled for box office relevance after initial reviews from critics were scathing.
