Hypnotic: Affleck’s Forgotten Flop Officially Scores a Surprising Streaming Comeback on Hulu

A costly theatrical disappointment

Hypnotic cost $70 million to make but brought in just $16 million at the box office. The film’s theatrical performance made it one of the biggest flops of Affleck’s career.

Three years after its theatrical run, the thriller has found a streaming home on Hulu in America. It has also remained among the top 10 VOD titles for over 30 days on Prime Video and Apple TV.

The story behind Hypnotic

Affleck stars alongside Alice Braga in the film, which also features Dayo Okeniyi. Max Borenstein and Robert Rodriguez wrote the screenplay, and Rodriguez directed after Affleck declined to take on the job.

The story follows Austin detective Danny Rourke as he searches for his missing daughter. With help from psychic Diana Cruz, he investigates crimes that distort reality and pursues a dangerous figure he believes may hold the key to finding her.

Mixed reactions from viewers

Hypnotic received a 32% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while its audience score was 62%. The split suggests viewers responded more positively than critics, even as the film struggled at theaters.

Braga and Okeniyi have also appeared in the Apple TV sci-fi series Dark Matter. Braga plays Amanda Lucas across both seasons, while Okeniyi has a major role as Leighton Vance.
