Dead, dozens injured: Halloween weekend violence across US leaves six cities shaken

Shootings across several cities

Dallas reported four deaths and 15 injuries after three shootings in the Deep Ellum neighborhood on Saturday night. Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said investigators were working to establish whether the incidents, which occurred over about 75 minutes, were connected. Some arrests had been made, but police did not provide details about charges.

Authorities also reported shootings in Fayetteville, Arkansas; Birmingham, Alabama; Newark, Delaware; and Bloomington, Illinois. In Fayetteville, six people were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds, and police said an altercation appeared to have occurred beforehand. No arrests had been made there.

Violence near game and campuses

In Birmingham, one person died and eight were wounded near Legion Field after the Magic City Classic football game. Police said vendors were set up along Graymont Avenue, where the shooting happened. One person was detained for questioning, and officers secured multiple weapons.

Fatal attacks at Halloween stores

Two separate shootings on Friday took place at Spirit Halloween stores in California and Michigan. In Fairfield, California, a woman aged 31 was killed in what police described as a targeted attack inside a store at an indoor mall. Six other people were wounded; family members told police the victim was pregnant.

In Madison Heights, Michigan, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot at a Spirit Halloween store. Another man was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening after bystanders assaulted him as officers took him into custody.

Other reports and investigations

Near Little Rock, Arkansas, a man died in a shooting early Sunday close to a strip mall, and several other people were injured. Police did not say how many were hurt. In Dallas, no officers were injured, despite police having increased their presence in Deep Ellum before the shootings.

The circumstances remained undetermined in several cases. Birmingham police said the reason for the shooting near Legion Field was unclear, while Newark authorities said the university would post investigation updates online.
