Deadspin | No. 7 UCLA's defense stifles Nevada to remain undefeated

Defense sets the tone

UCLA’s defense dominated the opening possessions, as Scooter Jackson, Jalen Woods and Derrick Barksdale each intercepted Duncan. Barksdale returned his pick for a touchdown, and Nevada then replaced Duncan with AJ Bianco.

The Wolf Pack reached UCLA territory on only two of their first seven possessions and entered the red zone once. Nevada finished with 176 yards, including 65 rushing yards; Herschel Turner Jr. led the team with 28 yards on 11 carries.

UCLA offense finds points

The Bruins opened with a field goal but punted on their next three possessions. Their first touchdown came on a 10-play, 71-yard drive in the second quarter, capped by Dieffenbach’s four-yard run.

Dieffenbach, making his third start for injured Nico Iamaleava, completed 16 of 30 passes for 178 yards. In the third quarter, he connected with Wayne Knight on a 12-yard touchdown pass that extended UCLA’s lead.

Bruins maintain unbeaten start

Knight’s run of scoring a rushing touchdown in every game this season ended, but the catch marked his second receiving touchdown of the campaign. UCLA’s 8-0 record matches its best start since 2005.

Bianco completed six of 13 passes for 71 yards after entering for Duncan. UCLA’s Sahir West and Aiden Gobaira each recorded 1.5 sacks; West added two tackles for loss, while Gobaira had three.
