Bodum recalls millions of popular coffee makers after dozens burned by breaking carafes

Recall covers eight models

The recall includes 5.9 million Bodum French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes in 8-cup and 12-cup sizes, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The agency said a damaged or cracked carafe can break unexpectedly during use and cause serious burns. Using a metal spoon to stir coffee is among the ways the glass may be damaged.

Burn reports prompt warning

Bodum USA received 70 reports of carafes breaking. Forty-eight of those incidents resulted in burns to consumers. The commission advised consumers to stop stirring coffee with metal spoons or utensils immediately. It said customers should contact Bodum to receive a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label.

Where the products were sold

The coffee makers were manufactured in Thailand and Portugal. They were sold at Walmart, Target and home goods stores, as well as through online retailers including Amazon.com. Bodum is a Danish-Swiss kitchenware company founded in 1944. The Independent said it had contacted the company for comment.
